Django Girls Mombasa Workshop
Django Girls is a Non-Profit Organization and a community that empowers and helps women to organize free, one-day programming workshops by providing tools, resources and support.The workshop aims at training ladies on Python,Html,css and Django Framework. Pwani Teknowgalz team Aisha Abulkadir and Ruth Kaveke took the initiative to bring the first ever Django girls workshop to Mombasa. The workshop took place at Swahilipot Hub on 10th and 11th February 2017 with over 40 ladies from different regions in Kenya trained on Python programming language.The ladies met on 10th February from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm to install and configure the necessary tools for the workshop.The workshop took place on 11th February from 8:00 am to 5:30 pm as girls created their own blogs using Django framework and learnt basics of html and css with guidance from eight coaches who volunteered to assist them through the training session.
During the workshop we were graced to have a visit from Techowomen mentors : TechWomen Kenya and Nigeria who talked to girls and encouraged them to pursing STEM related fields ,We were also honored to have Mrs Evelyne from Kenya Port Authority , Miss Hanna a researcher from UK and Fatma Twahir the curator of the National Museums at Fort Jesus .We also were honored to have Mahmoud Noor the patron of Swahilipot Hub and a consultant at Seacom to talk to the ladies on perusing ICT .The attendees were handed certificates and the workshop ended with a beautiful Django girls cake.
