GIS AND SCIENCE TRAINING
Mombasa Girls In STEM(Sciences Technology Engineering and Mathematics) is an alumnae engagement Innovative fund project by Techwomen Kenya implemented by Pwani Teknowgalz. The main goal of this project is to inspire young girls in Mombasa into venturing in sciences courses .
The third ToT training for the Mombasa Girls in STEM project was held Kizingo,Mombasa on Saturday Jan 30 2016.It entailed learning the basics of GIS (Geographical Information System) and Biotechnology.
The morning session started off well with Serah Kahiu Techwomen Kenya leading the ladies through scientific methods as a tool in investigating natural occurrences, the ladies also identified the steps in scientific methods and importance of creating Sustainable development goals in solving day today problems faced by the society as part of assessment ,this phase of the training ended in an interactive session where the girls were divided into groups of five and each group was to come up with sustainable development goals to concur with the problems that exist in our society today some which include poverty, zero hunger, quality Educations ,clean water among others.

Afternoon session was interesting as Umi Katuma Techwomen Kenya who is a GIS specialist took the ladies through Real world applications of GIS and the role it plays in remote sensing and locating geographically referenced data .The ladies also learnt the role that GIS plays in the Engineering ,and business sector .
The second phase of the afternoon session was led by Serah Kahiu of Techwomen Kenya who is also a biotechnologist. Serah introduced the girls to genetic engineering and the evolution of genetically modified crops and animals .The girls were able to learn the practical application of genetic engineering and were able to ask questions relating to that field.
The day ended with the girls having known how much science has evolved from GIS To genetic modified crops ,its will be fair to say that Science is the solution!.Much appreciations to Umi Katuma and Serah Kahiu of Techwomen Kenya for amazingly leading the Training sessions.
Lots of appreciation to Aisha Abu-Bakar of Pwani Teknowgalz for facilitating the whole training session,Joan Nabusoba, Dorine Kamau and Ruth Kaveke for helping the girls through the interactive sessions.
