Viola Konji, a first-year student at Strathmore University developed Sokoletu, an eCommerce platform for mama mboga and her customers. She mentioned that the Covid-19 pandemic devastated the livelihoods of street vendors disrupting their ability to do their jobs and leaving many in a fight for survival. Most reported a huge drop in their income due to reduced foot traffic in markets and public places.
“People did not want to go to the market due to the fear of contracting the virus. I looked for a way I would help vendors through technology. I started my project two weeks into the code hack programme. The mentors Ruth and Joan were so encouraging. They gave me that hope that I can do it. The experience gave me a broader view of how technology can solve problems,” said Ms. Konji who is pursuing Computer Science. Apart from technical skills, she also made friends and got more insights on SDGs.
